Videojet Printers

Ever wondered how to mark your product? Gone are the days of big contact stampers while non-contact printers have pretty much dominated the market. Of course, laser is now on the upswing claiming "no consumables" which is not quite accurate. They are, of course, less messy than their ink counterparts though. Lasers do use up something inside that is not as messy as ink but certainly as costly, if not more.............gases. As the laser is used more and more, the gases within the laser tube tend to become "used up" and the laser begins to loss strength. Over time, the laser will just not have enough guts to burn the product and so now the enjoyment of using laser is not much fun anymore. A quick call to your local service technician (oh yeah, that's another thing, how many places actually HAVE a local technician) and about $5,000.00 later plus labour and setup, you have your laser up and running for about another 5 years. There you go, they DO have consummables. Even though inkjet (CIJ or "continuous ink jet") printers are a bit more messy, the payoff is lower costs for consummables (if you shop around for aftermarket fluids) for the same amount of characters printed. Of course the cost for a laser printer vs. a CIJ printer is about 2 or 3 times more. Generally, the lasers tend to have fewer problems (unless you are one of the unlucky ones that bought a Videojet LaserPro DM series printer) and less maintenance but there still is SOME maintenance. Cleaning lenses, filters, etc. is still part of ownership. So, it's up to you, save some money and have a bit more mess or pay more for less mess but still inccur large repair bills when the laser tube dies. The choice is yours!
